- A current lifeguard certificate we recognise, or none at all and you take our course first
- You are willing to sit still and watch water for long stretches

- You have guarded a full season somewhere
- You are willing to write a rota and then be the one who fills the hole in it at seven on a Sunday morning
- You can tell somebody twice their size to get off the rope and mean it
Straight answerThe hard part is not the water. It is being the person the other guards ring when they are unsure, and being reachable when you said you would be.

- You are comfortable in shallow water with people who are not
- You can explain the same thing four different ways without changing your tone the fourth time
- A lifeguard certificate is useful here and is not required
Straight answerChildren who are frightened of water do not become unfrightened because you are encouraging. They become unfrightened because you are boring and predictable and you never rush them.
